Official Ping Pong Rules

Scoring

  • Games are played to 11 points
  • Must win by 2 points (deuce at 10-10)
  • Switch serves every 2 points
  • No serve advantage on match point

Serving Rules

  • Ball must be tossed at least 6 inches vertically
  • Ball must be struck from an open palm
  • Must hit your side first, then opponent's side
  • Server alternates every 2 points
  • During deuce (10-10+), server alternates every point

General Play

  • No volleying - ball must bounce on your side before hitting
  • Ball must be hit, not caught or carried
  • If ball hits the net but lands in, play continues
  • On serve, if ball hits net but lands in, it's a let (replay)

Match Format

  • Switch sides after each game
  • Best of 3 or best of 5 games typically
  • In final game of match, switch sides at 5 points

Faults (Point Lost)

  • Ball doesn't hit opponent's side
  • Ball is hit before it bounces on your side (volley)
  • Ball hits you or your clothing
  • Free hand touches the table during play
  • Table moves during play
